The Laurus Early Years Approach
Programme Details
Mother & Toddler is a parent-child programme designed for children aged 10 to 18 months and their guardians.
Early exposure to languages (English), science-based exploration and playing alongside peers their age helps children grow with confidence and meet their social, emotional, intellectual and physical developmental milestones. Laurus’s Early Years Learning Approach is the framework adopted by our nurturing and experienced educators.
In this programme, parents have the opportunity to observe Laurus’s school environment and build connections with other parents — this will facilitate a smooth transition into preschool once the child turns 18 months.
Class Overview
The Laurus Mother & Toddler Program is a parent-and-child program for children aged 10 to 18 months and their parents.
What makes the Laurus Mother & Toddler Program special?
All-English, small-group lessons.
We go far beyond simply “exposing” children to English through songs and finger play. Experienced native teachers work closely with each child in small groups, delivering the living sounds of real English directly.
Nurturing “why?” — the seeds of STEM.
Only at Laurus, where science is the lens for learning. Children experience the latest STEM education in English from this early age, reaching out to the wonders around them — sowing the seeds of curiosity.
More than a lesson — a pathway forward.
The Mother & Toddler Program is a starting point, not a goal. From here, a seamless path of learning continues to Preschool, Kindergarten, and Elementary.
What Happens in a Lesson
Each 45-minute class flows through five gentle stages — from a warm welcome to music, hands-on play, and a calming goodbye — so every child develops in balance alongside their parent.
Welcome & Warm-Up
Welcome greetings and hello songs to settle everyone in.
Music & Movement
Interactive singing with tambourines, egg shakers, scarves, bean bags, xylophones, and parachutes, plus baby yoga, stretches, and baby massage.
Themed Arts & Crafts / Games
A simple, hands-on craft based on the monthly theme, and a fun game for sensory or fine-motor development.
Gross Motor Play
Crawling, balancing, jumping, and obstacle courses — with soft balls, balance beams, slides, and tunnels — to build coordination.
Story Time & Cool Down
An interactive story tied to the theme, closing with a goodbye song.
The First Step Toward Preschool
The Mother & Toddler Program leads onward. Parents can see the Laurus school environment with their own eyes and build connections with other families — helping your child transition smoothly into Preschool at 18 months.
“Will it suit my child?” “What is the atmosphere like?”
The Mother & Toddler Program is here to answer those very questions.
As Japan's first STEM-focused international school, we use science as our lens to nurture scientific thinking from early childhood.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about the Mother & Toddler Program.
Q1. From what age can my child attend?
The program is for children aged 10 to 18 months and their parents.
Q2. When is the best time to start English for a baby?
Developmental science suggests that around 6 to 12 months is when babies most flexibly distinguish language sounds. Early, familiar exposure to English sounds is meaningful, but what matters most is enjoying it through interaction. We progress at each child’s own pace.
Q3. How much does it cost (tuition)?
It is ¥10,800 per term (4 lessons, materials included). A trial lesson is ¥2,700 per session.
Q4. Do parents need to speak English?
No — no English ability is required of parents. Laurus does not use a parent’s English ability as a factor for admission or enrollment. Through daily exposure to English, your child naturally becomes familiar with its sounds and expressions.
Q5. Is there any point in starting English at 0 or 1?
The sense that it is pointless often comes from simply showing TV or videos. Research shows that experiences through human interaction support learning far more than one-way audio. The Mother & Toddler class is exactly that space for dialogue.
Q6. Can we join during a stranger-anxiety or clingy phase?
Because it is a parent-and-child program, your child can take part comfortably in an environment where they feel safe. Please start with a trial lesson to see the atmosphere.
Q7. Which campuses offer it, and on what days and times?
It is held at 6 campuses across Tokyo and Kanagawa (Bunkyo, Jiyugaoka, Musashi-Kosugi, Musashi-Shinjo, Shirokanedai, Tsukishima). Days and times vary by campus.
Q8. Is there a trial lesson? How much?
Yes. We offer a trial lesson for ¥2,700 per session. You may choose your preferred date from the full-term schedule.
Q9. Can we continue straight on to Preschool?
Yes. The Mother & Toddler Program is designed as the first step toward Preschool. You can experience the school environment in advance and transition smoothly into Preschool from 18 months.
Q10. How is this different from online English or playgroups?
The biggest differences are the live, face-to-face interaction in small groups, the science- (STEM-) centered curriculum unique to Laurus, and the seamless pathway of learning that continues on to Preschool.
Parent Voices
Kind words from families who have taken part in the Mother & Toddler Program.
After the term ended, my child started saying “Open Please” at home — something Marisa (our teacher) had taught them! They can't walk yet, so it'll be a little while, but we'd love to enroll in Preschool too.
Parent, Musashi-Shinjo campus
It was an atmosphere where I could take part with my child and feel at ease. Marisa (our teacher) welcomed us warmly and we had a wonderful time. I was also able to connect with other parents of children the same age — a great opportunity. We'd love to join again next month.
Parent, Jiyugaoka campus
Every time, in such a warm atmosphere, we head home chatting together about how much fun it was. Both my child and I look forward to the weekly lessons.
Parent, Musashi-Kosugi campus
Watching Marisa work with the children taught me a lot about how to communicate with toddlers. I was impressed by how she used simple, clear words to encourage them to talk. Her approach gave me useful ideas for supporting my own child's language development.
